Texting while driving should be part of the standard driving road test

People who lack the skills necessary to text while driving but do so anyway have become a serious threat to public safety.  However, even with a law in place to restrict this behavior, it will be virtually impossible to enforce.  Therefore, the only way to make our roads safe again is to add one’s ability to text to the standard driving road tests.  However, I also believe that the laws (either current or forthcoming) should be modified so that those who do prove themselves to be competent texters may continue the practice until and unless they meet the following exceptions:

  • Drivers over the age of sixty
  • Drivers under the age of twenty-one
  • Drivers may not text with the radio playing
  • Drivers who are overly hungry
  • Drivers who are late for an appointment
  • If the driver enters an area with distracting signage (flashy billboards, etc.)
  • If the driver enters an area that is heavily wooded (for fear of animals jumping into the road)
  • Anywhere where the speed limit is over sixty-five MPH
  • Drivers going to vote (either local, state-wide, or national)
  • Drivers who are also eating anything that cannot be gripped with one hand
  • Drivers who smoke
  • Drivers whose pet(s) is (are) not properly seat-belted
  • Drivers whose children are deemed obnoxious
  • Drivers who are either drunk or have the intention of getting drunk
